The year opened under wintry conditions, prolonging heavy fog and snow storms which had, for two weeks now, covered much of the country.

Holmes and I, although desiring adventure, nevertheless counted ourselves fortunate, nestled, on this darkening New Year's afternoon, amidst the comfortable confines of 221B Baker Street.

Holmes, as seemed increasingly his wont, reclined upon the chaise longue, his languid form indicative of profuse morphine wholly self-administered.

I, meanwhile, perused the Illustrated London News, and was somewhat startled by the arrival of an errand boy who stood shivering in the doorway.
